Mira Costa Model UN sent 47 delegates to the National High School Model United Nations conference in New York City. The conference was held from Mar. 9-12 in the mid-town Hilton hotel with the closing session held in the United Nation General Assembly building.

Mira Costa finished the conference with the most prestigious award, the best large delegation.

“Out of 175 schools and 3000 students, we were number one. But, I wasn’t surprised,” Model UN advisor Robert Timberlake said.

Even though Timberlake had high expectations for the MUN team, he acknowledges the difficulty of the conference that Costa attended.

“We had the largest group there, 47 people, anyone can have a few stand-out people, but for us, we had so many people to demonstrate quality. They only gave three big school awards, we received the recognition that we deserved,” Timberlake said.

Even from the excellent overall performance of Mira Costa, many seniors were mentioned for outstanding performances. This conference was the last Model UN conference for the Seniors.

“It is the circle of life. We remember them as freshman, you see this person who has grown physically and mentally. There is a chain of memories for each one of them. I have a feeling of great nostalgia. The seniors are key to what we do, they influence everyone around them,” Timberlake said.

Mira Costa generally attends Nationals every two years, but Timberlake estimates that it will be another three years until the MUN team will go again.

“We set the bar high. It’s how you do it,” Timberlake said.
