Senior Derek Largent is not your average student athlete. He is a leader and star on both the football and baseball teams here at Mira Costa. Largent was a starter in both sports and will be attending El Camino in the fall for football and baseball.

At 6’3” and 210 pounds, Largent ended his football career on a high note with 44 tackles, one interception, 11 receptions, three touchdowns and a receiving long of 51 yards in the 2010 season. Largent and the Mustangs went 7-4 overall and 5-0 in Bay League.

“Football was really successful for me this year,” Largent said. “It was a fun season. The only way it could have been even better is if we had won CIF.”

In 2010, Largent won Bay League Defensive Player of The Year and was selected to be on the All-Bay League 1st team with some of his teammates. He was awarded these achievements as a linebacker and as a tight end.

“I first came out for football junior year,” Largent said. “I was influenced by my buddy Jackson Morrow to come out. I learned everything that season and got quite a bit of playing time.”

Following up his football season was a tough task, but Largent put on his cleats and headed towards the baseball diamond. Largent ended his baseball season with an average of .274 in 84 at-bats with 23 hits, 10 walks, 14 runs batted in and two homeruns, as the team’s right fielder and catcher.

“Derek is such a great athlete and has unlimited potential in baseball,” baseball coach Cassidy Olson said. “He did a great job of hitting behind Sean Isaac all year and led our team in Home Runs. Derek was also an outstanding leader and teammate.”

Largent managed to help the team with whatever needed to be done during the season. The team managed to go 17-14 in the regular season and 4-6 in Bay League falling one game short of making the CIF playoffs.

“The baseball season was not as successful for me but, I am a team player and wanted to help any way I could,” Largent said.

Multiple colleges such as Utah, San Diego State, Colorado, Montana State, and North Carolina Central have expressed interest in the scholar athlete for the next level of athletes. At the moment will attend El Camino community college but is currently waiting to hear back from San Diego State.

“I am looking forward to college because I will get more freedom in and out of school,” Largent said. “Costa was a great experience but high school for me was short lived and I only enjoyed it because of sports. It’s a great institution and I have no regrets throughout my four years.”
