As fall athletics gear up, one of the least physical sports on campus also prepares for writhing competition.

Comedy Sportz, Costa’s competitive improv team, held annual tryouts after school on Sept. 23 to select players for the 2014-15 team. In Comedy Sportz, teams of four players go up against one another and are judged on their creativity and ability to entertain.

This year, 80 students tried out for the team with only nine making the final cut. A total of 25 students will represent Costa on this season’s Comedy Sportz team.

“I love how Comedy Sportz gets to compete against other schools, just like any other physical sport does,” junior Hadley Thomas said. “It’s awesome to watch the players work together to make the scenes as creative and comical as they can while thinking on the spot.”

During the try-out, the team splits off into groups, each led by a returning team member who taught a few of the games played in competition to those trying out. However, only the best earned a spot on the Comedy Sportz team.

Players who have been on the team for more than two years did not have to participate in the tryouts.

“I was a little nervous when we first started playing the warm-up games with last year’s Comedy Sportz team,” junior Rachel Kay said. “But as we continued to practice, I got the hang of it and was able to utilize the advice the managers gave us before we split up in groups to start the official auditions.”

On Sept. 25, the finalized 2014-15 roster was posted on the drama room door. The team practices twice a week to prepare the team for upcoming competition. The first match is Nov. 20 in the drama room.

“It feels good to have the drama room back,” Comedy Sportz Manager Charlie Durham said. “I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming season and competing with the new team.”
