Hockey has high hopes for upcoming season

On Monday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 11, tryouts for Costa’s hockey team took place at the Toyota Sports Center.

Seventeen of the best players that tried out were placed on the team and another three on a substitution team.

“Based on try outs, I think we will have a successful season,” said right wing sophomore Chris Brown. “We have a lot of stellar players and everyone else is pretty good. We have a lot of depth.”

Last year, Wyatt Light lead Costa’s team with seven goals, six assists and 13 points total. The most points Light scored in a game was three against Notre Dame.

“We will do well because we have solid forwards that are all good players,” said goalie senior Ryan Fowlkes. “But we are at a slight disadvantage because we are limited to players from our school only. Other schools can recruit because it’s not a school sport for them.”

Ryan Ng was Costa’s second MVP last year with four goals, five assists and nine points. His longest point streak was four from April 16 to May 17.

“Our team is going to do well this season,” left wing Nick Simsir said. “ Last year we had good players but needed to step up as a team. This year, we have strong players and by the looks of try outs, it is going to be a fun season.”

On the other hand, Costa’s records last year concluded a five game in a row losing streak. They fall right behind the Cubs who lost six games in a row last year. This year the team plans on doing better.

“One advantage is we all know each other and we all get along,” Brown said. “That usually leads to better communication on the ice. A disadvantage is we have a lot of lower class men and not many seniors.”

The Mustangs first game is Friday March 27 from 5:15 to 6:15 at the Toyota Sports Center.

“This year we have a number of returning players, who play at a competitive level and who are focused on learning,” coach Oystrick said. “We plan on having more practice time, which always helps in improving our skill level and assists in getting the players to work as a team.”
