Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Corona Centennial High School Frida, 59-39, in the third round of the Battle At The Beach Tournament hosted by Redondo Union. Costa received a standout performance from junior guard Allie Navarette who accumulated 22 points.

Costa maintained a large lead against Corona Centennial for most of the game. However, a comeback in the third quarter left Costa struggling to regain a comfortable margin again. According to Navarette, it was the Mustang’s team chemistry that was a key factor in their victory.

“What we did well was we had a lot more team chemistry,” Navarette said. “It was the first game where we had a solid lead so everyone wasn’t so nervous.”

Costa takes on Saturday, Edison High School in the fourth round of the Battle At The Beach Tournament. The Mustangs will need to secure a win in order to improve their 1-2 record. According to Navarette, Costa’s win increased their confidence level for the next game.

“This game I feel like we were all able to fully play together and gain a lot of confidence for the future,” Navarette said.
