Mira Costa’s boys water polo team placed second in the Henry Stuart South Bay Tournament in San Diego against Millikan, Costa Mesa, La Serna, and Hoover on Friday and Saturday.

Costa defeated Millikan 13-2 and Costa Mesa High School 13-9 on Friday. On Saturday, Costa defeated to La Serna 9-7, but fell to Hoover 7-6 in overtime in the championship game. Senior attacker Christian Thornton and sophomore attacker Chris Agliozzo were Costa’s top performers throughout the weekend, scoring plenty of goals on offense.

“I felt that we came out strong, and we were excellent on our shots and passing ,”  said sophomore attacker Diego Almendariz said. “However, on Saturday, we fell and did not perform well like we did Friday. We couldn’t capitalize on our chances.”

Mira Costa, now 11-6 overall and 3-0 in the Bay League will next take on Palos Verdes Tuesday in an away Bay League game. According to Almendariz, Costa needs to be prepared for Tuesday.

“To be successful, we need to be more patient with the ball,” Almenderiz said. If we get our minds focused and prepared we should win.”
