The annual Mira Costa Pride Day took place on Mar. 18, where students and adults cleaned up and beautified the school campus.

Mira Costa principal Dr. Ben Dale and the PTSA did a pre-walk prior to the event in order to locate which areas would need the most work and cleanup.

“What [Pride Day] is meant to do is to bring us all together to work on projects [such as] working on the various planters that we have, re-landscaping areas, painting some areas,” Dale said. “I wish we had it every day but I’m glad that once a year we pick up after ourselves”

The volunteers had the opportunity to come any length of their choosing between 9 am and noon. Projects were divided up among the volunteers and included various activities based off of gardening.

“We mostly focused on gardening and picking up trash along the campus,” sophomore London Foster said.  “We had a bunch of jobs to do [such as] raking, pulling weeds, and re-mulching.”

If unable to attend the event, participants were also able to show their support by donating supplies used for the event. Several plants and gardening tools were donated to help.

The event was utilized by many students looking to gain vounteer hours; however, according to Dale, the event also aimed at giving students a new outlook on keeping their school clean.

“It’s meant to be a day where we make landscaping improvements but we have to spend a lot of our time cleaning trash out of the bushes and out of [other places in the school] and that’s unfortunate,” Dale said.  “I hope it gives students ownership of the school and makes them want to keep it looking nice.”
