Mira Costa’s football team battled through four tough quarters Friday night but unfortunately the El Segundo Eagles swooped in and snatched a win from the Mustangs.

The Mustangs were defeated by the Eagles in their third game of the season, suffering a 21-6 loss on the road on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The team made some great plays but ultimately could not stop the Eagles from winning.

“We all had a chip on our shoulder after losing to El Segundo last year,” senior Robert Fiene said. “We made sure to practice hard this week and watch a lot of film to get us prepared but sadly, we came up short.”

After a quarter of play, the Eagles held a 7-0 lead. The Mustangs found some success in their ground game, but were unable to break through. El Segundo’s strong defense made it difficult to get points on the board.

“I think in the first quarter we ran the ball really well but we just couldn’t execute and finish plays when we needed too,” junior quarterback Nick Carpino said.

The second quarter was filled with action, with the Eagles tacking on their second touchdown of the game and the Mustangs scoring their first. Junior running back Malachi McMahon scored the touchdown for the Mustangs, bringing Costa within eight points at halftime.

“[Junior quarterback] Reed Vabrey had some great throws and Malachi is an amazing running back and we are very lucky to have him in the backfield,” Fiene said. “The touchdown he scored awesome and much needed as well.”

Both teams did not score in the  third quarter due to strong defensive plays from both teams. The Eagles had a solid gameplan and that both defenses were hard to get past in the third quarter, sophomore Jackson Fischer said.

“El Segundo came in with a good gameplan on defense and played a good game,” Fischer said. “We ran the ball well but we weren’t finishing in the red zone, but I thought our defense played well as a team.”
