Mira Costa’s girls basketball team fell short to Palos Verdes 55-48 on Friday, Jan. 12 on the Sea Kings home court. Seniors Kelli Toyooka, Hayley Herdman and Kira Escovar continued to lead the team as well as contributing with three pointers and executing plays.

The Mustangs played a consistent game starting out trailing by 3 points in the first quarter, 11-8 but the Sea Kings managed to outscore them with a score of 24-16 at half time. Coming out of the half the Mustangs started to rebound more and played a strong defense which led to a score of 37-31 and they never gave up in the fourth quarter according to sophomore Skylar Herdman.

“I believe that we all hustled our hardest and everyone worked so hard the entire game to never give up,” Herdman said. “Our positive attitudes really showed and nobody expressed any negativity during the game.”

Costa is now 8-7 overall and 1-1 in League, and will play Morningside on Tuesday Jan. 16th at Morningside High School. The Mustangs are looking forward to the games to come and want to focus on rebounding more consistently.

“I think that we can continue to rebound better and make smarter passes and bring lots of intensity and determination,” junior Juliana Chen said.
