The Mira Costa Mustangs kept their winning streak alive alive, dominating the Centennial Apaches, 48-6, in this year’s homecoming game.

The Mustangs went up against the Apaches at Waller Stadium on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Once again, Costa’s powerhouse offense and dynamic passing game proved to be a game changer, and Costa added a fourth win to their winning streak.

“I think we were just efficient on both sides of the ball and our offense played a big game, “ senior wide receiver Kian Towfighi said.

The first half started off strong for the Mustangs when junior quarterback Sam Whitney connected with sophomore wide receiver Kayle Marsh downfield for a 53-yard touchdown pass, putting the first points on the board for Costa. Whitney then made two more touchdown passes to junior wide receiver Thomas Southey, making an 18-yard and a 10-yard touchdown pass, and giving Costa a 21-6 lead. The Mustang defense then had the opportunity to shine when Towfighi gave a short handoff off on kickoff return to senior Jackson Fischer, who sprinted across the field for a touchdown. Costa closed out the half when Whitney found Towfighi in the endzone for a 19-yard touchdown pass, making the score 35-6.

“We’ve been working hard all week and we had a big block by Bryce [Bryce Carlisle] so everything worked out as planned, “ Fischer said.

The Mustangs continued to control the field in the second half, and Whitney made a 19-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Kage Geohegan. Whitney then connected with sophomore wide receiver Riley Bloomstrand,  making a 50-yard pass play for a final touchdown, making the final score, 48-6.

“I thought we played well, “ senior Sam Michael said. “We pass protected well and I thought we ran the ball well and I’m excited for Redondo.”

Costa, now 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Bay League, will go up against Redondo Union School at Waller Stadium at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1. This year’s rivalry game will be a test for the Mustangs, as it will set the tone going into the California Interscholastic Federation Playoffs.

“I’m excited to see how we do on Friday, “ Towfighi said. “This is going to be the biggest game of the year.”
