The newest addition to the Disney franchise, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” delivers an interesting and eerie take on the traditional fairytale story.

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a captivating, action packed film with a profound storyline that manages to give viewers the nostalgic feeling that often arises from traditional Disney animated movies. With intrictate characters and an original plot, the movie is great for young viewers and those who wish to experience the nostalgic feeling sparked by Disney movies.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a Walt Disney Pictures production and is the sequel to the original “Maleficent” which came out in 2014. Both of the movies are live-action films based on the original “Sleeping Beauty.” Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Michele Pfeiffer are a few of the many familiar faces starring in the movie.

The film picks up after the first installment and primarily follows the main villain of “Sleeping Beauty,” Maleficent. Unlike the original tale, Maleficent is painted in a more protagonistic light in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” The film emphasizes her mother-daughter relationship with Princess Aurora and the obstacles that are associated with that.

Disney fans will love “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” as it brings to life one of Disney’s most recognizable villains. The storyline strays away from the well-known story of Aurora, which contributes to the movie’s originality and makes it a worthwhile watch, rather than just a dull remake.

The setting of the film is eyecatching and immerses viewers into the realm in which the story takes place. Each setting, from the mystical characters in the enchanted forest to the royal castle located in the heart of the made-up city, has its own unique characteristics. Not only does the environment of the film add the desired element of fantasy, but it also keeps viewers entertained and intrigued as there are many nuances to be found in the setting.

Although the film does have a predictable ending, its emphasis on the importance of familial bonds is great for young viewers. Many Disney movies leave viewers with the notion that everything has a happy ending, which simply is not always true. However, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” teaches young viewers about the importance of loyalty and honesty through the characters and their mistakes. The themes in the movie are applicable to real life, which helps viewers relate back to the movie despite it taking place in a fantasy world.

Jolie brilliantly makes the character of Maleficent come to life in her rendition of the Disney villain. She encompasses the perfect mixture of the creepy, animal-like creature that Maleficent is, and the side of her that is capable of being human. Although she has few lines compared to the other characters, her powerful presence is enough to keep the movie interesting and prevents her from being overlooked by viewers.

Jolie’s convincing performance also allows viewers to find themselves having an overwhelming amount of sympathy for the character, which is something not normally felt for the traditional movie villain. This added level of emotion for viewers helps them to better connect to the character and allows Maleficent to redeem herself not only in the eyes of the other characters, but in the eyes of viewers as well.

The film is a great balance of fantasy and humanity, and seamlessly incorporates an aspect of magic that fantasy lovers will appreciate. Along with this, there are often scenes with hints of comic relief, an example being Maleficent trying very hard to fit in with Aurora’s future in-laws, the King and Queen. In the midst of this action packed and somewhat violent movie, some humor is refreshing.

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is not just a movie for Disney lovers, as even those who are unfamiliar with the original 1959 “Sleeping Beauty” will find something to love about this film. With its action packed, yet emotional scenes and interesting setting, the movie quickly enthralls viewers of all ages.

Released in Oct. 18, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is rated PG and is playing in theaters nationwide.
