Costa boys water polo fell short against Santa Barbara on Nov. 5, ending with a final score of 9-8. The teams were neck and neck throughout the game, but Costa ultimately fell short in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section quarter-finals by one point.

“It was two teams who were very close in level, and everybody played really well,” senior center defender Victor Katz said. “Unfortunately, we lost by one point, but we are still proud that we made it to quarter-finals in CIF.”

This was the Mustangs’ second match in the 2021 water polo CIF tournament. The team first defeated Water polo narrowly loses to Santa Barbara Los Osos, 12-9, but came short against Santa Barbara, which was ranked number nine in the tournament.

“We were ranked number 14 in CIF and the fact that we only lost by one point against SB is a great accomplishment,” said senior goalie Bernardo Herzer. “Our team had a strong defense and offense throughout the whole game, and we played our best.”

The loss concludes the Mustangs’ 2021 season. According to Katz, all of the tough practices paid off, and the whole team is happy with how far it has come in its season.

“It was great to have my last Costa Mustang water polo game at home,” senior utility player Cole Christensen said. “We had a great season and have all worked really hard to get to the quarter-finals in CIF.”
