On Nov. 3, the Mustangs battled in their home game against Foothill High School, but sustained a tough loss with a final score of 9-3. The Mustangs had great defense according to head coach Dave Halushka, but the team ultimately came short, losing by 6.
Costa had a solid start in the first quarter and held a tight game with the Knights, according to sophomore attacker Jack Swenson. The teams were head to head until Costa’s defense began to falter, letting up three goals. However, senior attacker Luke Smith was able to score a goal in a five meter foul shot.
“We were able to start the game off strong,” sophomore set guard Michael Ingram said. “We just couldn’t stay on the same page on our offense.”
In the second and third quarter, Costa continued to fall behind both on offense and defense. The Mustangs didn’t score. The Knights’ offense, on the other hand, managed to score 4 goals, making it 1-7.
“Foothill was a very strong team, with certain Division 1 committed players,” junior set Kalani Nelson said. “It was a hard fought game for everyone.”
During the last quarter of the game, Costa’s defense limited the goals scored, while their offense was able to score twice. Costa fought until the very end of the game, but ultimately lost 9-3.
“We had a great defensive effort throughout the entire game,” sophomore set guard Jack Krikorian said. “Unfortunately, we just couldn’t convert enough on offense.”
Costa would end up finishing off with a winning record of 13-12. According to Krikorian, they had a tough start, but by the end of the season the team had strong ties and were playing to their fullest potential.
“By the end of the season, we became like brothers from our bonds,” Krikorian said. “We look forward to training this offseason to see an even better one next year.”
